What is TelCheck?
TelCheck is a French phone number reputation verification service. Launched to meet growing consumer demand in the face of an explosion in unsolicited calls, TelCheck allows anyone to quickly and freely identify whether an unknown number is associated with suspicious activities: scams, aggressive telemarketing, fake official bodies, or harassment.
Our platform aggregates millions of community reports submitted by users across France. Each report contributes to enriching our database and improving the accuracy of our reputation scores. By centralising this information and making it accessible to everyone, TelCheck acts as a collective shield against phone nuisances.
Whether you receive a call from an unknown number starting with 09, 06, 07, 01 or any other prefix, TelCheck gives you in a matter of seconds a reliable assessment based on the collective experience of the community. The service is completely free, requires no registration, and respects your privacy: no personal data is collected during your searches.
How does the reputation score work?
The TelCheck reputation score is a numerical value ranging from 1 to 9. It summarises in a single figure the level of trust or risk associated with a given phone number. Here is how to interpret this scale:
- 1 – 4Trustworthy. Number generally associated with a known professional, official service, or a contact. Few or no negative reports.
- 5Neutral. Insufficient data or mixed opinions. Caution is still advised.
- 6 – 9Suspicious. Many negative reports, behaviours identified as abusive (scam, harassment, aggressive telemarketing). Avoid calling back.
This score is automatically calculated from several factors: the volume and recency of community reports, the category declared by users (e.g. canvassing, scam, fake customer service), behavioural patterns observed (call frequency, hours, durations), and cross-referencing with our other aggregated data sources.
The score is updated in near real-time with each new report. A number can therefore see its score change rapidly if a scam campaign is detected. Our algorithm also takes into account the consistency of reports to rule out false positives.
Data sources
TelCheck relies on a combination of complementary data sources to build its reputation scores. This multi-source approach guarantees better coverage and greater reliability compared to a single source.
The primary source consists of community reports submitted directly on the TelCheck site by users who have received unwanted calls. These feedback reports are the backbone of our system: they reflect real situations experienced by real people in France.
These community data are then cross-referenced with other aggregated sources that we do not disclose by name, in accordance with our partnership agreements. This cross-referencing makes it possible to validate or nuance the reports and to eliminate potential biases linked to a single database.
We also integrate technical data on French telephone prefixes — sourced from ARCEP and carrier attribution databases — in order to contextualise each number (line type, original carrier, geographic region).
What we do not do: TelCheck never collects the identity of number owners, does not cooperate with personal data collection services, and does not resell any information to third parties for advertising or commercial purposes.
Quality commitment
The reliability and accuracy of the information we publish is at the heart of our mission. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards in data quality and respect for your rights.
- GDPR compliance: all our data collection and processing practices comply with the European General Data Protection Regulation.
- No personal data: searches performed on TelCheck are completely anonymous. We do not know who is searching for what.
- Right to contest: if you believe that a number belonging to you is incorrectly reported, you can contact us at [email protected] to request a review.
- Active moderation: our team regularly monitors reports to detect abuse and guarantee data integrity.
- Transparency: we communicate openly about our methodology and the limitations of our scores.
The TelCheck API
TelCheck provides a free REST API allowing developers to integrate reputation scores directly into their applications. Whether you want to protect a contact form, filter commercial leads, or enrich a CRM, our API offers a simple and powerful solution.
No API key required. Access is free within the limits of our fair use policy (30 requests per minute per IP). The API returns structured JSON data including the score, risk level, line type, and community comments.
