How does phone numbering work in France?
In France, all phone numbers have 10 digits and start with 0. The prefix (the first two digits, or sometimes four for 08XX numbers) determines the line type, the likely carrier, and the cost of a call. Numbers starting with 06 and 07 are mobile; 01–05 are geographic landlines assigned by region; 09 corresponds to VoIP and internet box subscriptions. Numbers beginning with 08 have special rates that vary by sub-prefix: from free calls (0800) to very expensive premium rates (0899).
