Tech support scams by phone: "Your computer is infected"

How fake Microsoft or Apple tech support phone scams work and how to protect yourself effectively.

The fake tech support scam arrives in two forms: an unsolicited cold call from someone claiming to work for Microsoft, Apple, or your carrier; or a browser pop-up locking your screen with an "urgent" phone number. Both routes lead to the same trap.

The remote access trap

Once they have your trust, scammers ask you to install a remote-access tool — typically TeamViewer or AnyDesk. With full control of your screen they can access your online banking, steal saved passwords, charge hundreds of euros for a fake repair, or silently install malware.

The rule that never fails

No legitimate tech company — not Microsoft, not Apple, not any French carrier — will ever cold-call you to report a problem on your device. If you receive such a call, hang up immediately. If you see a blocking pop-up, close your browser using Task Manager without dialling the number shown.

If you already gave access

  • Cut your internet connection immediately to stop any active remote session.
  • Uninstall the remote-access software.
  • Change all passwords from a different device.
  • Contact your bank and file a police report via service-public.fr.
  • Visit cybermalveillance.gouv.fr for tailored support.

Check and report

Look up the suspicious number on TelCheck (telcheck.fr) and report the attempt on Signal Conso (signalconso.gouv.fr).
