Received a call from a number starting with 0899 or 118 and wondering how much it will cost to call back? Premium rate numbers are regulated by ARCEP in France. This guide covers everything you need to know to avoid unexpected charges.
The 08xx tariff breakdown
0800 is freephone — free from any landline or mobile. The 0810–0820 range carries local or shared rates. The 0890–0893 range has significant surcharges. 0897–0898 can cost up to €1.50 per call plus €0.50 per minute, while 0899 reaches up to €1.50 per call plus €1.50 per minute.
118xx directory services
Numbers starting with 118 are directory enquiry services. Their rates are unregulated — typically €3–5 per call with additional per-minute charges sometimes exceeding €3/min. A free internet search is always a better alternative.
How scammers exploit premium rate numbers
The one-ring scam is the most common technique: your phone rings once then cuts off, hoping you call back a premium number out of curiosity. Fake voicemail notifications via SMS are another common vector. Always verify an unknown number on TelCheck before calling back.
Disputing charges
