What is debt collection calling?
Debt collection calls come from debt recovery agencies. These calls can be legitimate (banks, licensed collection agencies) or fraudulent. In France, collection agencies must comply with strict legal rules: they cannot harass you, call at unreasonable hours, or use intimidating practices. If you receive a suspicious call, always verify the caller's identity before providing any information.
Regulations in France
In France, telephone canvassing is governed by the Consumer Act (loi Hamon) of March 17, 2014 and reinforced by law n° 2020-901 of July 24, 2020. Since March 1, 2023, telephone canvassing is prohibited Monday to Friday before 8am and after 8pm, Saturday before 9am and after 7pm, and all day on Sundays and public holidays. Violations can be reported to the DGCCRF (France's consumer protection agency).
What should you do if you receive this type of call?
- Never call back an unknown number that hung up without leaving a message.
- Never give out your bank details, social security number, or password over the phone.
- If in doubt, hang up and call the official organization directly through its known number.
- Report the number on TelCheck to protect other users.
- Register on Bloctel (bloctel.gouv.fr) to limit commercial telemarketing calls.
- If you are a victim of fraud, file a complaint with the Police or Gendarmerie.
